Formulate a professional development goal based the needs that you have identified. This goal should be:
measurable/observable
should lead to improvement of teaching, student achievement, and/or improvement of learning environment.
should describe new knowledge or skills that you will acquire and how that knowledge/skill will affect the school/district setting.
linked to applicable Rhode Island Beginning Teacher Standards and elements, e.g. RIBTS 2.4.
In the space below, describe your professional development goal. In a second paragraph, use the information above to provide a rationale for your goal by explaining the personal need that it will address as well as how addressing this goal benefits your students and your school.
I. Professional Development Goal
An area which I would consider a personal development goals would be managing the classroom. I think that I am okay at it, and I continued to make improvements but I think it is a difficult to do perfectly when you are teaching for the first time. When you are student teaching I think at first the students do not think they have to listen to you because you are not their "regular teacher" or because you yourself are a student.
The goal is measurable because I will be able to see that the students are paying attention more, learning more and responding to redirection more. If I am not making improvements I will also be able to identify the lack of student attention and following directions. I would think that my lessons would not feel as if they were running smoothly as well. The students may not be answering questions when prompted. Some students have a look which has told me they may not be understanding all I have said. All of these indicators will provide me with feedback about my classroom management and will help me reflect and plan for what I can change in my teaching.
As time continues to go by I have been privy to observing my cooperating teachers and how they teach. I have been able to adjust my classroom management skill and use techniques that work better than others. As a student teach the students seem to respond more to my role as the teacher. I also have learned easier way to manage classroom behavior as I have gained more experience. In particular I have noticed the more a teacher gets to know their students, the more they are willing to listen and pay attention. In addition I believe the way in which a lesson is structured can also contribute to classroom management.
Now that you have a PD goal, think about what type of learning opportunities you will participate in to address your needs. Use these links to investigate learning options:
Based on what you have found out, write a 1-2 paragraph narrative outlining at least two ways (PD categories) you will engage in engage in by the end of your first year of teaching. For each activity, explain how you think it will address the need that you have identified.
II. Professional Development Plan
I will first try to keep my lessons engaging. One way I can help to ensure to that I will make my lessons engaging will be to incorporate technology in to my classroom frequently. Students seem to respond to technology very well. Their environments are constanly engrossed in technology. They repond to it much more than print materials. Another way I can make them engaging is to make the lesson as relevent to the students as possible. If a teacher makes connections to items in the students lives they immediately will pay more attention. Also connecting lessons to current events and topics in media will increase the liklihood that students will pay more attention.I will also
I can make my rules for my class clear and attainable for the students to accomplish. I can do this by making my class simple and easily understandable. With class rules that easy to accomplish, students are more likely to follow directions. I also could create the class rules with the students so they have some ownership in their class rules. The students will also be more inclined to follow the directions if they thought of them first.
I can make observations of teachers whom witness different ways in which teachers manage their classes. If I open myself to new ideas about classroom management I can learn. I think there are many opportunities for teachers to collaborate. I think collaboration gives teachers the opportunity to learns from other professionals, reflect on their own teaching and make changes to instruction and classroom management in the future.
